The call for a comprehensive and lawful public consultation process in Fiji has gained traction following comments from Kini Marawa, the Executive Director of Diabetes Fiji. His remarks were aimed at the rapid electricity tariff awareness initiative led by the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC).

Marawa has expressed concern that the FCCC’s approach, which includes setting up awareness booths for only a limited time, falls short of fostering meaningful public engagement. He highlighted that the issues surrounding electricity tariffs have direct implications for the cost of living, affecting small businesses, families, and vulnerable communities already facing financial challenges.

He emphasized that the timing of awareness efforts, which seem to occur after key decisions have been made, does not facilitate true consultation but rather serves as a form of information dissemination. Marawa pointed out the importance of upholding principles of rule of law and people-centered governance, advocating for a consultation process that is time-sensitive, transparent, and fair.

Marawa urged the Fiji Government and the Prime Minister to instruct the FCCC to undertake a structured public consultation process. This initiative would allow for the voices of communities, civil society, businesses, and vulnerable groups to be authentically heard.

He asserted that engaging with the public should be seen as a demonstration of democracy, rather than a delay, especially considering that policy decisions heavily influence daily survival. Marawa reiterated that hasty processes should not become a standard practice when livelihoods are in jeopardy, declaring public consultation as a necessity rather than an option.

FBC News is currently seeking a response from the FCCC regarding these assertions.
