The Ministry of Health and Medical Services is embarking on a transformative upgrade of its radiology services by replacing outdated analog X-ray machines with state-of-the-art digital systems featuring advanced artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. Over the course of this initiative, 15-year-old equipment will be phased out, marking a significant modernization effort.
Sefanaia Takotavuki, a Senior Biomedical Engineer overseeing the project, confirmed that the antiquated manual film processing will no longer be utilized. Instead, the new fleet will comprise 18 high-tech floor- and ceiling-mounted digital X-ray units sourced from a leading Chinese manufacturer through a rigorous public tender process.
A standout feature of these upgraded systems is the integration of AI, which is set to markedly enhance both the accuracy and efficiency of diagnostic procedures. This technological advancement promises to improve patient outcomes and streamline operations within the healthcare system.
Installation of the new machines has already commenced at key locations including Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva, Nausori, and Taveuni. Following these installations, additional units will be allocated to major sub-divisional and divisional hospitals, as well as selected remote rural facilities, ensuring that healthcare service access is equitable for all communities.
According to Takotavuki, this significant upgrade will not only reduce patient wait times but also enhance image clarity, representing a considerable leap forward in patient care and diagnostic accuracy across Fiji’s public health network. This modernization reflects a committed investment in healthcare infrastructure aimed at improving the overall service delivery to the public.
