Fiji Unveils Updated Diabetes Guidelines for Frontline Care

Doctors and nurses at Korovou Hospital in Tailevu have recently undergone training on Fiji’s updated national diabetes guidelines, an initiative aimed at enhancing frontline diabetic care across the country. This training follows the national launch of the revised guidelines, alongside a comprehensive Training of Trainers program implemented in all divisions. This ensures that health workers throughout Fiji have access to standardized and current clinical information.

The updated guidelines emphasize the importance of lifestyle modifications, including healthy eating habits, regular physical activity, and effective weight management. They advocate for a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables while recommending reduced intake of salt, sugar, and fats, as well as the incorporation of low-Glycemic Index foods into daily meals.

Furthermore, the Ministry highlights that these guidelines stress the significance of avoiding smoking and moderating alcohol consumption. They also emphasize the necessity of regular follow-ups, medication adherence, and routine check-ups to prevent complications and promote long-term health for individuals living with diabetes.

This proactive approach not only aims to improve patient outcomes but also reflects a commitment to empowering healthcare professionals in Fiji to provide the best possible care for those affected by diabetes. With these updated guidelines, there is potential for significant positive changes in the management and prevention of this chronic disease within the community.
