Lamiti Malawai Primary School on Gau Island has recently experienced positive developments thanks to the Fijian government’s commitment to enhancing education in rural and maritime regions. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro visited the school to engage with the community and understand their needs, providing practical solutions to support education in the area.
During his visit, Radrodro unveiled a fully registered fibreglass boat, equipped with a 40HP engine and valued at $24,000. This vessel is essential for families residing in maritime locations, serving as a vital means of transportation for students. The introduction of this new boat is expected to significantly improve the safety of students’ daily commutes, especially during adverse weather conditions, and aims to increase school attendance for those who endure long journeys to reach their classrooms.
Alongside the boat, the Ministry of Education contributed new library books and hygiene equipment, further enhancing learning conditions and health standards for both students and teachers. These resources are particularly impactful in small island communities, where they can transform the educational experience for children.
Radrodro praised the dedication of teachers and school management who tirelessly work in these remote areas, often far from their homes. He emphasized that government policies continue to be shaped by the challenges observed directly in rural and maritime schools.
