FIJI Water, in partnership with Neptune Pacific Career Centre, has announced a substantial investment of $14 million to enhance training opportunities in Fiji, specifically targeting students and employees in the marine and manufacturing sectors. This investment will facilitate the establishment of a new training facility within Fiji National University, emphasizing practical experience and academic certification essential for skill development in these industries.
The announcement was made by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, Fiji National University’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba, and The Wonderful Company’s Executive Vice President Craig Cooper at an event held last month at the Pacific Centre for Maritime Studies. This initiative reflects a collaborative effort among FIJI Water, Neptune Pacific, and Fiji National University, driven by research that identified a significant gap in essential industrial skills within the local workforce.
The new career centre aims to draft a solid pipeline for skilled employment opportunities by offering a variety of technical and management courses tailored to the needs of the market. Students will have the chance to earn academic credits and certifications upon completion of core and specialized training programs. Over the coming decade, this initiative is expected to benefit more than 400 students, equipping them with vital skills for both local and international job markets.
Professor Nabobo-Baba emphasized that this investment is a crucial step toward fostering long-term economic growth and establishing Fiji as a center of excellence in the marine and manufacturing sectors within the South Pacific. Cooper also noted the unprecedented demand for skilled workers in these fields, highlighting that this program will cultivate a culture of continuous learning and innovation among graduates.
The appointment of Carol Watkins as the director of the Career Centre, effective November 1, further illustrates the initiative’s commitment to educational quality and workforce development.
