Fiji is actively addressing its challenges as a transit and distribution hub for illegal drugs, prompting a coordinated effort between the Fiji Police Force and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces to implement enhanced strategies against this growing issue. This initiative was recently emphasized by Minister for Policing and Communications, Ioane Naivalurua, during a meeting with Reverend Mosese Cakau of the Assemblies of God Church.

During the meeting, Minister Naivalurua expressed appreciation for the church’s contributions to community service and stressed the importance of building stronger partnerships to tackle the increasing drug crisis facing the nation. Central to these proactive measures is the DUAVATA framework, which encourages collaboration among various community groups—including vanua (community), lotu (church), and Government bodies. This approach is further supported by awareness programs aimed specifically at schools and local communities.

Additionally, Naivalurua urged families and churches to take a more active role in preventing drug abuse and promoting early intervention, particularly focusing on the youth aged 18 to 30, who are most vulnerable to drug-related challenges. He emphasized that successfully addressing this issue requires a combination of effective law enforcement and meaningful community engagement. The Government remains dedicated to an organized and sustainable strategy in confronting these challenges, instilling hope for a healthier future for Fiji’s communities.
