Fiji Funds Mosque Fence to Boost Unity and Inclusivity

Fiji Unites Communities with Mosque Fence Funded by Multi-Ethnic Grant Program

The Fijian Government has reaffirmed its dedication to promoting unity and inclusivity with the inauguration of the Valebasoga Jame Mosque Fencing Project in Labasa on November 13, 2025. This project, valued at $9,833, is funded through the Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs’ Multi-Ethnic Grant Program and includes the installation of a new cement boundary fence, communal storage shelves, and improved tile facilities.

These enhancements aim to bolster security, hygiene, and overall usability for the 250-member Muslim community in Valebasoga. Charan Jeath Singh, Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, emphasized that this initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to enhancing community ties and fostering shared values among diverse population segments.

Minister Singh stated, “This project reflects how Government is investing at the grassroots level to promote unity and togetherness among our diverse communities.” The Valebasoga Jame Mosque serves not just as a religious space but also as a hub where individuals from different backgrounds can connect and nurture harmony within the community.

Mr. Munabbar, a member of the mosque committee, expressed gratitude for the government’s assistance, noting that the upgrades will ensure the mosque becomes a safer and more welcoming environment for families to gather for prayers, education, and community interactions. He remarked, “These improvements will protect our mosque and create a better environment for families.”

This fencing project is part of a wider initiative seen throughout the nation as the Coalition Government promotes social cohesion, cultural respect, and the overall well-being of communities. Similar efforts, including a newly constructed fence for the Vatukarasa Muslim community in Nadroga, illustrate the consistent drive by the government to empower local organizations and strengthen social bonds through the Multi-Ethnic Grant Program. Minister Singh has previously reinforced the importance of these projects in providing safe, respectful environments for all community members.

Additionally, the government has increased funding for the Multi-Ethnic Grant Program from $1.2 million to $2 million this year, reflecting its ongoing commitment to supporting the diverse communities across Fiji. Through these initiatives, the Fijian government is establishing a foundation for a strong, interconnected society that embraces diversity and aims for a hopeful future for all citizens.
