Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, has revealed plans to implement drug testing at forthcoming local rugby tournaments in Fiji. This announcement was made during the closing ceremony of the Fiji Sports Council Grassroot Vatulele 7s held at Lawaqa Park, where he emphasized the critical need for integrity in sports.

During his address on Saturday night, Saukuru highlighted, “We will have drug testing in local tournaments in the future. We will have officials on-site because drugs do not have a place in sports. You will represent Fiji one day.” His remarks served to encourage athletes to maintain a drug-free commitment, reinforcing the core values of sportsmanship.

The two-day tournament concluded with notable champions: the Police team claimed victory in the women’s division, triumphing over Lilian Amazon, while in the men’s division, the Fiji 7s Development team outperformed the Ravuka Sharks with a score of 17-7.

In expressing his gratitude, Saukuru acknowledged the dedication of all athletes, officials, and management involved in the tournament and praised the government’s ongoing support for sports. “I want to acknowledge all players, officials, and management who participated. We thank the government for their support towards sports. Sports have put Fiji’s name out there,” he noted.

This initiative represents a significant move towards ensuring fair play and integrity within grassroots rugby in Fiji. The introduction of drug testing signifies a commitment to uphold sportsmanship and reflect the values that Fiji aims to portray on the international stage. As the country continues to invest in its sporting framework, there is a hopeful outlook for the development of a cleaner and more reputable athletic environment.
