All schools in Fiji will be closed tomorrow as a precautionary measure in response to severe rainfall and extensive flooding across the nation. Aseri Radrodro, the Minister for Education, made the announcement after consultations with the National Disaster Risk Management Office, highlighting the importance of safeguarding students and school communities in light of the current conditions.
District Education Offices have been assessing the impact of the flooding, and the decision to keep schools closed aims to ensure the safety of children. School heads and teachers are encouraged to maintain communication with their Management Committees and District Education Offices for ongoing updates regarding the situation. They are also advised to secure their school premises in preparation for the adverse weather.
Parents and guardians are reminded to keep their children at home, while also avoiding unnecessary travel and steering clear of flooded roads, creeks, and rivers. Engaging in activities like swimming in flood-affected areas is strongly discouraged for safety reasons.
The Ministry of Education is actively monitoring the circumstances and will provide updates on the reopening of schools as the situation evolves. The Minister emphasized that the safety and welfare of children and school communities remain the top priority for the Ministry.
