Eighteen foreign nationals have faced deportation in Fiji this financial year for overstaying their visas or violating immigration laws. This move continues the rising trend in deportations, which recorded 44 in 2023-2024 and 74 the year before. Immigration Minister Viliame Naupoto highlighted that these actions are part of the government’s commitment to uphold immigration laws and ensure that foreign visitors comply with regulations.
Minister Naupoto explained that deportation is typically pursued when individuals disregard directives from immigration authorities. Those warned to leave due to visa expirations or other infractions must comply; otherwise, they risk deportation. He acknowledged that some of those being deported are linked to criminal activities, including drug offenses. The minister expressed a preference for voluntary departures, noting the substantial costs associated with enforced deportation.
The government’s firm approach coincides with increasing concerns over the number of foreign nationals overstaying their visas, which currently exceeds 8,000. This rise has prompted a re-evaluation of existing policies aimed at mitigating illegal immigration while creating a fair system for everyone involved.
Naupoto has emphasized the importance of regularizing immigration statuses and adhering to visa conditions, warning that non-compliance can result in serious repercussions, including bans on re-entry into Fiji.
