The Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection has strongly condemned the shocking bullying and abuse of a 16-year-old boy that has recently surfaced in a disturbing video circulating on social media. The footage reveals the teenager being restrained, threatened with a machete, and coerced into inhaling marijuana, sparking outrage across the community.
Minister Sashi Kiran characterized the incident as a grave act of violence rather than a mere prank, emphasizing that the primary focus should be on ensuring the safety and well-being of the boy and his family. She calls upon adults, parents, and community leaders to take immediate action when children are at risk, urging them to report any instances of abuse to the authorities without hesitation.
Kiran has reached out to community figures, including village headmen, chiefs, and church leaders, asking them to support the family and deliver a strong message that violence and bullying against children will not be tolerated. She highlighted the importance of strengthening community engagement and fostering open dialogues with young people about the issues of bullying and substance abuse, while also advocating for more support for parents and guardians in these situations.
Furthermore, Kiran announced that efforts are ongoing to develop Fiji’s National Action Plan on Violence Against Children. Plans are also in motion for the launch of a Parenting App aimed at equipping caregivers with the tools and knowledge to better protect and guide their children. This proactive approach represents a commendable step towards addressing child safety and fostering a supportive environment for the well-being of the youth in Fiji.
