Fiji Rugby Union chairman John Sanday has called for match officiating standards to elevate in line with Fiji’s new status as a tier one rugby nation. Speaking at the Fiji Rugby Referees Awards earlier this month at the Vodafone Arena in Suva, Sanday emphasized the importance of referees embracing the union’s vision of advancing rugby, particularly for younger officials entering the sport.

He urged referees to collaborate with the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) to achieve excellence in rugby, especially as the nation prepares to participate in the historical Nations Championship next year. Sanday expressed appreciation for the dedication of referees, coaches, and educators who have worked to mentor and uplift novice referees, fostering a culture of respect and excellence within the sport.

Highlighting the role of referees as vital agents of change, he stated that the standards of match officiating must quickly align with the expectations of a tier one rugby nation. “Our match officiating also has to rise to that level in the quickest possible time to do that,” Sanday affirmed.

Further echoing these sentiments, Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru, in his keynote address, shared a vision for a future where Fiji’s tier one status is exemplified not only in gameplay but also in officiating. He emphasized the crucial role referees play in achieving this aspiration, affirming that their work directly supports the goal of maintaining Fiji’s esteemed rugby reputation.

As Fiji embarks on this ambitious journey, the commitment from both officials and referees promises to uplift the standards of rugby officiating and enhance the nation’s performance on the world stage. This united effort sets a hopeful frame for the future of rugby in Fiji as it strives for continued growth and excellence.
