During the recent EXTRA Architecture Conference and Trade Exhibition, Member of Parliament Manoa Kamikamica emphasized the vast opportunities for growth and collaboration within the architecture sector in Fiji. Addressing delegates, he shared insights on the substantial financial potential in the sector, estimating that the pipeline for infrastructure projects, including those from Airports Fiji Ltd, could approach a total investment of approximately $12 billion.
Mr. Kamikamica expressed enthusiasm about the anticipated job creation linked to this planned investment, predicting a bustling future for architects and engineers in Fiji. He noted, “The prospects are exciting, I can see a lot of busy architects and engineers in the years to come, and of course, that means at the end of it, more jobs, more employment for our people.” He underscored the significance of architecture in shaping a stronger and more sustainable Fiji, affirming that “every structure and every design contributes to a bigger vision.”
In addition to Kamikamica’s remarks, acting Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka also spoke about the architecture and construction sector’s critical role in enhancing national development, particularly concerning tourism. He outlined the government’s vision of integrating transportation, tourism, accommodation, and infrastructure into a sustainable framework.
Gavoka presented the Fiji National Sustainable Tourism Framework (NSTF) as a roadmap for the next decade, aiming to foster a resilient and inclusive tourism sector. The NSTF emphasizes creating enabling environments for investment and promoting local entrepreneurship while protecting the environment. He stated that the construction industry must align with these goals by embracing sustainable practices in design, ensuring that the infrastructures support climate resilience, and respect local contexts.
