Fiji is making significant strides in its initiative to establish a modern national hospital, as highlighted by Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu. This progress follows the announcement that the Valelevu Grounds has been identified as a potential site for the new hospital, which is currently undergoing technical and feasibility assessments to ensure its suitability.

Dr. Lalabalavu emphasized that the initiative extends beyond just constructing a new facility. It also encompasses strategic upgrades to existing hospitals, with a focus on necessary improvements at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWM) while long-term plans for the new national hospital are developed.

“This was endorsed, so right now it is about ensuring that we work in close collaboration with our donor partners to see the next phase of the work,” he stated. The proposed development is part of the Pacific Healthy Islands Transformation Project, with significant financial backing from organizations such as the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and the OPEC Fund.

Furthermore, the Australian Government continues to play a vital role by providing substantial grant funding, which helps facilitate urgent upgrades at CWM Hospital. This support is essential to maintaining service delivery as Fiji plans for a future-ready healthcare system.

Dr. Lalabalavu noted that this move signifies a conscious shift from short-term remedies to more sustainable, long-term investments, ultimately aiming to create a stronger and more resilient health infrastructure that will benefit future generations. This forward-thinking approach underscores Fiji’s commitment to enhancing its healthcare capabilities and ensuring high-quality health services for its citizens.
