Authorities in Fiji are celebrating a significant breakthrough in their fight against drug trafficking, following a monumental seizure of cocaine valued at approximately $A780 million ($F1.2 billion). This quantity, which amounts to 2.64 tonnes, was recovered during a major raid in Vatia, Tavua, last week.

The successful operation was made possible through a collaborative effort led by the Serious Organised Crime and Intelligence Department, working in close association with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Forensic analysis confirmed that all 2,630 parcels discovered during the raid tested positive for cocaine.

Charges have been brought against six individuals – four from Ecuador and two local men from Veisaru, Ba – who were presented at the Rakiraki Magistrate’s Court following their arrest. The police conducted surveillance and intelligence operations for several months, initially flagging the suspected shipment from South America in December 2025.

On January 15, police intercepted a vehicle transporting the illicit drugs and subsequently raided a boat near Vatia Wharf, leading to the unearthing of one of the largest drug hauls in the country’s history. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu emphasized the critical role of regional collaboration and intelligence-sharing in dismantling transnational criminal networks.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to pursue additional suspects associated with this extensive smuggling operation, underscoring the commitment of local and international law enforcement to combat drug trafficking effectively. This operation not only demonstrates the capabilities of Fiji’s law enforcement but also serves as a reminder of the importance of global partnerships in addressing complex criminal activities.
