The Fiji Rugby Football Union is placing a strong emphasis on advancing women’s rugby, acknowledging it as both a significant challenge and a vital focus area. Acting CEO Koli Sewabu highlighted the importance of garnering increased support from unions and stakeholders to enhance the women’s program, particularly at the grassroots level.
“The women’s space has always been a challenging one for us, so it was important to address that today and for the unions and our grassroots program to put much more emphasis on our women’s initiatives,” Sewabu remarked. He noted that the current structures supporting women’s rugby often rely too much on the frameworks established for men’s rugby, which can hinder their growth. In light of this, Fiji Rugby is considering innovative strategies to promote women’s rugby as a standalone entity.
Sewabu announced that a new Women in Rugby Strategy will be developed in the coming weeks as part of a comprehensive strategic plan for Fiji Rugby. This effort aims to strengthen the necessary structures and capacities to support the sustainable development of women’s rugby, particularly with the growing international opportunities available to female athletes.
The commitment to enhancing women’s rugby represents a progressive move for Fiji Rugby and aims to encourage greater female participation in the sport. This focus not only endeavors to bring about increased success and recognition for women athletes but also paves the way for a more inclusive sporting environment in Fiji.
