Fiji Rugby Union Launches Global Growth Push Through UK Partnership Drive

The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is actively enhancing its international partnerships and global presence with a series of strategic engagements in the United Kingdom this week. Under the leadership of Chairman John Sanday and Acting CEO Koli Sewabu, the visit aligns with the Flying Fijians’ participation in the 2025 Quilter Nations Series, emphasizing the FRU’s commitment to expanding Fiji’s rugby influence and fostering commercial growth.

During their stay in London, the delegation met with UK-based partner 8th Man to enhance connections with the Fijian diaspora and explore new business opportunities. They actively participated in the Fiji/UK Trade Show, promoting sports diplomacy and reinforcing trade and cultural ties between the two nations.

In addition to networking efforts, the FRU team visited several high-performance training facilities to explore potential partnerships for future Flying Fijians campaigns. They engaged in fruitful discussions with the Rugby Football Union President Deborah Griffin and CEO Bill Sweeney, focusing on collaboration in player development and tournament planning.

Chairman Sanday described the visit as highly productive, opening doors for innovation and cooperation, while Sewabu reiterated that the engagements reflect the FRU’s dedication to building a robust and sustainable future for Fijian rugby. The discussions not only showcased the potential for future endeavors but aligned Fiji Rugby’s initiatives with the country’s broader diplomatic and development goals, as demonstrated in a meeting with Fiji’s High Commissioner to the UK.

In athletic performance, the Flying Fijians faced a tough challenge in their opening Quilter Nations Series match against England, suffering a 38–18 loss. They will next battle France on Saturday in Bordeaux, followed by a match against Spain the following Saturday in Málaga.

This proactive initiative reflects an optimistic vision for rugby in Fiji, with aspirations for elevating its status on the international stage. The FRU’s commitment to strengthening ties and expanding its global reach signifies promising prospects for the sport and the nation. The ongoing focus on infrastructure, player development, and community engagement shows a collective resolve that could lead Fiji rugby to future successes.
