Fiji Rugby Signals Bold Push to Grow Women’s Rugby

The Fiji Rugby Football Union is prioritizing the development of women’s rugby, recognizing it as both a challenge and an essential focus area. Acting CEO Koli Sewabu emphasized the need for greater attention from unions and stakeholders to enhance the women’s program, particularly from the grassroots level.

“The women’s space has always been a challenging one for us, so it was important to talk about that today and for the unions and our grassroots area to put much more focus on our women’s program,” Sewabu stated. He pointed out that current structures for women’s rugby often depend too heavily on men’s rugby systems, which limits their development. In response, Fiji Rugby is exploring innovative ways to promote women’s rugby as an independent entity.

Sewabu indicated that a new Women in Rugby Strategy will be developed in the coming weeks as part of a broader strategic plan for Fiji Rugby. This initiative aims to build the necessary capacity and frameworks to support the long-term growth of women’s rugby, especially in light of the increasing international opportunities available to female players.

The commitment to enhancing women’s rugby not only reflects a progressive step for Fiji Rugby but also aims to inspire more female participation in the sport, which can lead to greater success and recognition for women athletes in the rugby arena.
