Fiji has taken a significant step toward ensuring that all communities have access to safe and reliable drinking water with the introduction of the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Master Plan. Infrastructure Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau unveiled the plan during an event at the Holiday Inn in Suva, highlighting its crucial role in enhancing public health and fostering sustainable development in rural areas.
Minister Tuisawau emphasized that this initiative lays out essential investment priorities, defines institutional responsibilities, and investigates financing options, underlining the belief that access to clean water and sanitation is a fundamental human right integral to health and well-being. The master plan was meticulously developed through collaborative efforts involving governmental agencies, civil society, and international partners, and marks a major milestone in the government’s dedication to universal water and sanitation access.
The deployment of the master plan will occur in two phases. The initial phase, spanning from 2025 to 2030, will aim for universal physical coverage utilizing sustainable and climate-resilient systems. Following this, phase two, set for 2031 to 2050, will focus on enhancing service delivery through improved planning and innovative methodologies. This comprehensive approach is well-aligned with several existing national policies, including the National Development Plan and the Water Sector Strategy 2050.
Minister Tuisawau’s remarks echo earlier successful initiatives, such as the Vusama Water Project, which notably improved access to clean water for two villages. These projects highlight the government’s ongoing commitment to addressing water supply and sanitation issues.
