The Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, has raised alarms regarding an increasing number of young adults fleeing their homes due to domestic violence. During her address, she underscored the ministry’s commitment to locating the relatives of these individuals and facilitating safe reunions wherever feasible.
For those unable to return home safely, the ministry is taking proactive measures by offering alternative support, which includes placing young adults in shelters and connecting them with education and employment opportunities. “The longer these children remain on the streets, the greater their risk of facing drug abuse, HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and other forms of abuse,” Ms. Kiran stated, highlighting the urgency of timely intervention.
Kiran asserted that every individual deserves to live with dignity, stressing the need for proper shelter and essential resources. She emphasized that the ministry is dedicated to pursuing this goal. A key facet of their approach is building trust through compassion and coordinated care. She also encouraged individuals who support the homeless to connect them with comprehensive services, including shelters, job placements, and educational opportunities.
While recognizing the good intentions behind feeding homeless individuals, Kiran warned that such isolated efforts might unintentionally prolong street living, which could expose individuals to ongoing dangers. She expressed gratitude for the support from various individuals and organizations, framing the community’s collective responsibility as vital in assisting fellow citizens in leading improved lives.
Kiran further highlighted that alleviating the social challenges faced by street populations requires a holistic approach, which systematically involves communities, faith-based organizations, and the public in concerted efforts.
