The Fiji Police Force is expressing serious concerns regarding road safety, as many drivers continue to disregard traffic regulations during bustling morning hours. Matelita Daveta, Assistant Officer in Charge of Traffic, pointed out that this issue has persisted since the beginning of the year, despite ongoing appeals for greater compliance among motorists.
Daveta emphasized the heightened risks faced by officers who are stationed to direct traffic, often standing unprotected in the middle of busy roads. She called on drivers to enhance their vigilance, particularly given that there have been five accidents involving students this month alone, one of which tragically resulted in a fatality.
The statistics paint a concerning picture, with the road death toll in January rising to six, significantly up from two in the same month last year. So far in February, one death has already been recorded, contrasting with no fatalities during the same period in the previous year. This alarming increase in accidents is largely attributed to driver negligence, according to Daveta, who also mentioned that the Police Force is working in conjunction with the Land Transport Authority to tackle these safety issues.
Motorists are urged to prioritize the safety of student pedestrians at all times, as the community grapples with these pressing concerns. Improving adherence to road rules is essential for safeguarding not just students but all members of the community.
