Hotels and resorts in Fiji are grappling with ongoing staffing difficulties, as many skilled workers seek better opportunities abroad. Francis Lee, the General Manager of Shangri La Yanuca Island Fiji, emphasized the importance of community support in overcoming these challenges. He highlighted that some resorts have been able to maintain operations through the assistance of local families, who often have multi-generational ties to the hospitality industry.

Lee expressed a commitment to supporting local communities by sourcing a significant portion of supplies, including fresh fruits, vegetables, and seafood, directly from nearby areas. He stated, “We want to support the local community as much as we can,” showcasing the resort’s proactive approach to bolster local economies.

In addition to enhancing community bonds, this strategy of local sourcing not only provides fresh ingredients but also strengthens relationships between the tourism sector and the surrounding communities.
