The Parliament has approved the Registration of Skilled Professionals repeal bill, effectively dismantling the previous system that permitted foreign workers to be evaluated by the Skilled Professionals Evaluation Committee. The bill garnered significant support, with 34 votes in favor, 10 opposed, and 11 members abstaining from the vote.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasized that the repeal reinstates proper authority to professional organizations while maintaining immigration’s role in the issuance of work permits. He stated that this change aims to bolster public safety and allow foreign professionals continued opportunities to work in Fiji. Rabuka highlighted the importance of restoring statutory authority to professional bodies while ensuring transparent coordination through government ministries, enhancing accountability, and reducing procedural duplication.
On the other hand, Opposition MP Alvick Maharaj expressed concerns that the abrupt repeal, lacking a robust replacement mechanism, could exacerbate Fiji’s existing shortage of skilled professionals. He warned that such a move might contribute to an accelerated brain drain and hinder foreign investment in the country.
However, Immigration Minister Viliame Naupoto defended the repeal by noting that several individuals previously approved by the committee did not fulfill basic eligibility criteria. He articulated that the repeal is critical in protecting the integrity of Fiji’s immigration system, reinforcing national security, and ensuring consistent processing for all foreign professionals seeking to enter the nation.
