Fiji Boosts Grid Resilience with Lightning Surge Arrestors

Fiji Power Gets Lightning Shield as EFL Installs Surge Arrestors

Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) is proactively addressing the challenges posed by lightning strikes in the Western Division by installing lightning surge arrestors. This initiative reflects EFL’s dedication to enhancing the resilience of its infrastructure and minimizing disruptions caused by severe weather, particularly during the humid months from November to April when power outages are most prevalent.

Historically, lightning-induced power disruptions have led to widespread outages, prompting EFL to take significant measures to protect its electrical distribution and transmission networks. The newly installed surge arrestors will mitigate voltage spikes by safely diverting excess voltage to the ground, thereby significantly reducing the frequency of unplanned outages.

On November 16, EFL announced the de-energization of the 132kV transmission line between the Nadarivatu switching station and Vuda zone substation to facilitate the installation of these protective devices safely. This strategic decision underscores EFL’s commitment to strengthening its electrical infrastructure in the face of unpredictable weather patterns, ensuring more stable power supply for its customers.

Recent events have highlighted the need for such improvements. For instance, on March 28, 2025, Viti Levu experienced severe power outages due to intense lightning activity, impacting thousands of residents. EFL’s response team worked diligently to restore power, showcasing their ability to effectively manage emergency situations. The recurring challenges of weather-related disruptions have only reinforced EFL’s commitment to improving service reliability and preparing for future challenges.

With the implementation of lightning surge arrestors and continued advancements in infrastructure, EFL is instilling hope for a more resilient and reliable energy supply in Fiji. These efforts not only aim to reduce the impact of natural phenomena on vital services but also strive to enhance community confidence in the stability of their electricity supply during adverse weather conditions.
