The Fiji Police Force is facing a significant internal challenge as an increasing number of its officers are encountering legal troubles due to drug-related offenses. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has openly addressed this critical issue, underscoring the necessity of maintaining integrity within the force and ensuring that officers are held accountable for their actions.
Tudravu emphasized that the progression of the police organization is hindered by the presence of corrupt individuals. He highlighted that steps are being taken to deal with any officers who test positive for drug use, reiterating the commitment to accountability and transparency. “I think we are heading in the right direction,” he remarked, stressing the determination of the police force to eradicate corruption from its ranks.
Despite the troubling cases of misconduct, there is a silver lining. Recent statistics show a positive development, with reported complaints against police decreasing by 18% this year, dropping from 283 to 231 cases. Most complaints stemmed from breaches of conduct and neglect of duty, indicating an overall improvement in internal discipline. Tudravu noted that this decline is indicative of better supervision and a renewed focus on professional standards among officers.
Acknowledging the ongoing need for improvement, the police chief has called on officers to align with expected professional conduct. He also encouraged the public to voice their concerns when service levels do not meet expectations, further promoting the idea of community engagement and accountability.
