Fiji Police Probe Into Officers Signals New Push for Accountability

The Fiji Police Force is currently investigating several officers for their alleged involvement in drug-related offenses, marking a significant escalation in its efforts to address internal corruption and maintain integrity within the ranks. Inspector Usaia Donu from the Serious Organised Crime Unit emphasized that no officers are above the law and confirmed that all cases are being dealt with according to established procedures.

Speaking on FBC’s “Your Voice” program, Donu highlighted the importance of voluntary drug testing, which is performed during recruitment and throughout an officer’s career to ensure a drug-free environment within the police force. He stated, “Once instructions are given from the hierarchy, officers have to submit. We are a disciplined organization — we have to abide by the rules.”

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu reinforced this commitment by conveying that any officers implicated in drug activities will face legal consequences once sufficient evidence is gathered. He asserted, “If there is evidence they are implicated, we will take them to court — that’s for sure. But trust the process,” ensuring that the community is aware that accountability is central to their operations.

The ongoing scrutiny of officers comes in light of previous cases within the force, including past investigations into allegations of drug possession and distribution involving officers. These revelations emphasize the leadership’s resolve to combat misconduct and reinforce public trust in law enforcement.

Additionally, the police leadership has reiterated the importance of transparency and community involvement in reporting suspicious activities, which plays a crucial role in improving accountability among officers. Leadership is actively encouraging the public to cooperate, assuring that any reports would be handled confidentially.

As the Fiji Police Force navigates these challenges, there is a hopeful outlook. The current investigation presents a critical opportunity for the department to reaffirm its commitment to upholding ethical standards and enhancing trust with the communities it serves. Despite the adversity this situation presents, it can ultimately lead to constructive changes that strengthen both the police force and public confidence.
