Fiji Police Expands Cold-Case Unit to Revisit Decades-Old Homicides

Unresolved homicides continue to be a priority for the Fiji Police, with 13 cold cases actively being investigated. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has reported progress on six out of the 19 files handled by the cold cases unit. A significant recent case involved the alleged murder-suicide of a couple in Naseva, Seqaqa, which occurred on September 24, 2023. This case has been ruled as a suicide and an unnatural death, with findings accepted by the Resident Magistrate of Labasa and the document now filed with the Director of the Criminal Investigations Department.

In addition, two other long-standing cases have been referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice. These include the 1993 murder of Josateki Tabaka in Nakorovou Village, Nalawa, Ra, and a 2013 murder and arson case in Natovora, Nadroga, where the suspect is currently overseas. Additionally, three further complex cases are under consultation with the DPP, including a 2020 homicide case between Mana Island and Nukuni, Ono-I-Lau, an alleged murder at the Lees Trading facility, and the ongoing investigation into the missing Russian couple in Nadi.

The challenges in investigating these old cases, some dating back 10 to 15 years, were acknowledged by Tudravu, who reassured the public of the police’s commitment to meticulously reviewing all available evidence. The establishment of a dedicated cold case team reflects the police force’s strategy to deepen their investigative processes, enhancing their effectiveness and rebuilding public trust.

This initiative not only aims to bring closure to the victims’ families but also signals a hopeful future for law enforcement in Fiji. By thoroughly examining unresolved cases and renewing focus on community safety and support, the police reaffirm their commitment to justice and public accountability, inspiring confidence among the community they serve.
