Fiji Police Cold Case Unit Gains Momentum, Eyes More Closures

The Fiji Police Force has reported significant advancements in its cold case investigations, announcing progress in six out of nineteen active cases, with one high-profile case officially closed. During a press conference, Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu shared valuable updates on several long-standing investigations, highlighting the dedicated efforts of the cold case team.

Commissioner Tudravu stated, “Of the 19 files that are being handled by the cold case team, we have made some progress on six files.” A notable development is the closure of a tragic case involving an alleged murder-suicide of a couple in Nasau that occurred on September 25, 2023. Investigators have definitively ruled out foul play in this particular incident.

Additionally, two cases of interest have been sent to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for legal advice. These cases include the alleged murder of Josefa Tikoitoga in Ra back in 1993 and a disturbing 2013 incident in Nadroga in which a man is alleged to have murdered his wife and daughter before fleeing overseas and setting their home ablaze. Commissioner Tudravu noted that investigations have indicated the suspect is currently overseas.

Three more complex investigations remain under active consultation with the ODPP. These involve a 2020 murder occurring between Mana Island and Malolo, as well as the historic disappearance of a Russian couple in the 1990s. The continued work of the cold case team is a clear commitment from the Fiji Police Force to bring resolution to these long-standing and complex cases.

This announcement comes amid an overarching effort by the Fiji Police to enhance their cold case resolution capabilities. Previously, Commissioner Tudravu acknowledged the limitations in manpower and resources that have hindered many investigations. However, with the establishment of a specialized unit that includes retired officers, there’s a renewed focus on tackling cold cases that have stumped investigations for years. By integrating seasoned professionals, the police aim to navigate past resource constraints and provide families with the closure they have sought for so long.

This proactive approach not only fosters hope for the families of cold case victims but also aims to restore public trust in policing across Fiji. As the cold case team continues to uncover new leads and insights, the community holds onto the optimistic belief that justice is within reach.
