The Fijian government is actively monitoring the welfare of its workers engaged under the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme, with a focus on fair treatment and safety across 496 Australian locations. Minister for Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations Agni Deo Singh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring the well-being of Fijian laborers as they navigate challenges in the workforce.
During a recent statement, Minister Singh emphasized the ministry’s ongoing collaboration with the Australian government and approved employers, asserting that they are addressing concerns regarding workers’ treatment and conditions. “We are proud of the progress made so far. Through ongoing dialogue and cooperation with Australian-approved employers, we have addressed many concerns and will continue to work on rectifying remaining issues,” he mentioned.
Acknowledging the vast number of workers spread across Australia, Minister Singh noted that while conducting site visits to every location may be impractical, the government’s commitment to safeguarding workers’ rights remains strong. His recent visits, which spanned from late October to mid-November, yielded positive feedback, with employers demonstrating transparency and workers expressing gratitude for the support provided.
He highlighted that all PALM-related inquiries should be directed to the Employment Ministry to ensure timely resolutions and reaffirmed, “The welfare of our workers is our top priority. With strong cooperation between Fiji and Australia, PALM continues to provide valuable skills, income, and opportunities for our people.”
This proactive stance by the Fijian government reflects an ongoing dedication to enhancing the welfare of its citizens abroad while advocating for equitable treatment. The response to challenges faced by Fijian workers in Australia illustrates a growing commitment toward establishing a respectful and safe working environment, fostering hope for continual improvements in labor relations.
As engagement efforts and support initiatives advance, it is clear that the collaborative approach between the Fijian and Australian governments aims to uphold workers’ rights and ensure that all involved benefit from fair and safe labor practices.
