The Fiji Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has put a hold on the new electricity tariff set to take effect on January 1, 2026. This suspension will facilitate a 21-day period for public consultation on the new tariff structure and its anticipated impacts.
This decision follows a mixed response from the public after the FCCC announced the new rates on December 19, which were based on the completion of a regulatory assessment of a proposal submitted by Energy Fiji Limited (EFL). The FCCC has indicated that this additional consultation is a unique measure aimed at encouraging the public to provide their input regarding the proposed changes.
“The measure taken by the FCCC is an exception and all Fijians are urged to make submissions,” the Commission stated. It also announced plans to engage with various stakeholders, urging not only individual consumers but also consumer groups, businesses, government bodies, political parties, social organizations, and youth representatives to contribute their views. Individuals can submit feedback through an online survey or in writing.
The FCCC stressed its commitment to operating independently and free from external pressures, ensuring that all regulatory decisions are made based on evidence and in the long-term interests of consumers and the Fijian economy. Earlier this month, FCCC chief executive Senikavika Jiuta mentioned that the need for this review arises from the necessity to keep electricity prices fair and affordable while allowing for investments that will maintain a dependable power supply. These changes aim to transition towards renewable energy and ensure long-term energy security for the nation.
Jiuta further elaborated that the revised tariffs would facilitate approximately $1.57 billion in investments over the next four years, aimed at expanding renewable energy generation, bolstering transmission infrastructure, and upgrading the national electricity network. This proactive approach towards tariffs not only promotes transparency and public engagement but also illustrates a commitment to advancing Fiji’s energy landscape.
