The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has initiated enforcement actions following an oil discharge incident into a public drain on Jai Ambamma Road in Vatuwaqa. Environmental inspectors confirmed that the source of the discharge was the Ashok Transport Pte Limited yard located in the vicinity.

In response to this incident, the Ministry has issued a Prohibition Notice and Remedial Orders under the Environment Management Act 2005. A fixed penalty of $1,500 was levied in accordance with the Environment Management (Waste Disposal and Recycling) Regulations 2007. The company has been mandated to clean up all oil contamination along the affected drain and its facility, with all remediation activities required to be completed within 14 days.

Additionally, the Prohibition Notice requires an immediate halt to any discharge of oil, waste oil, or lubricants from the premises. Dr. Sivendra Michael, the Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, emphasized the seriousness of non-compliance with environmental regulations. He stated, “Non-compliance with waste permit conditions is a serious offense. Where negligence is established, the Ministry will not hesitate to impose penalties and pursue further legal action in accordance with the Environment Management Act. Environmental protection is not optional, and businesses must be accountable for the impacts of their operations.”

To ensure adherence to the issued orders, the Ministry will continue to monitor the site closely. Businesses, particularly those near waterways, have been reminded of their obligations to manage the handling, storage, and containment of oil and other hazardous substances responsibly.

Regular inspections and compliance monitoring will persist in collaboration with relevant authorities, reinforcing ongoing efforts to safeguard Fiji’s waterways and marine environment. This enforcement action reflects a strong commitment to environmental protection and accountability among businesses, fostering a healthier ecosystem for future generations.
