Opposition MP Rinesh Sharma is calling for the suspension of a contractor associated with the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) due to growing concerns highlighted by residents of Naqiliso Settlement. This urgent plea comes in light of reports that development work carried out by FCS contractors blocked a crucial drainage system, leading to significant flooding over the past weekend.

In a recent social media post, Mr. Sharma commended the Assistant Minister for Health for visiting the affected area and acknowledged the media and relevant authorities for their swift response. He stressed the importance of communication in addressing the community’s challenges, stating, “Dialogue and debate led to action. I understand that there are endless issues, but there is always hope to act on them for the people of Fiji.”

During his address at the opening of Parliament, Mr. Sharma raised these issues directly with the Acting Attorney-General, shedding light on the contractor’s alleged misconduct. Residents reported alarming threats from the contractor regarding plans to demolish part of their homes and a community prayer area. Mr. Sharma described this approach as unacceptable, insisting that immediate steps be taken to suspend the contractor, urging them to “learn some humility first.”

The situation in Naqiliso Settlement has sparked significant public concern, as residents express fears over how nearby construction could affect their homes and increase the risk of flooding. This incident underscores the critical need for effective engagement between contractors and local communities. There is hope that prompt actions will be taken to address these urgent issues, enhancing the living conditions for the residents of Naqiliso Settlement and fostering a more harmonious community environment.
