From Hurdles to Scrubs: Fiji Nursing Graduate Finds Purpose in Mental Health

Fiji nursing graduate overcomes hurdles, finds purpose in mental health care

Emosi Naitoko achieved a notable milestone yesterday by graduating with a Bachelor of Nursing from the University of Fiji, culminating four years of hard work and commitment. The 22-year-old, who hails from Kabariki, Kadavu, and has maternal connections to Vuna, Taveuni, was part of a cohort of 308 graduates recognized during the graduation ceremony held at the Saweni campus in Lautoka.

Reflecting on his academic experience, Mr. Naitoko credited his internships for shaping his professional outlook, particularly a transformative stint at St. Giles Hospital in Suva that deepened his passion for mental health care. “It highlighted the struggles that individuals face, especially the hidden battles related to their mental health,” he remarked. “You may look well on the outside, but you can’t always see the turmoil within.”

Despite the hurdles he encountered, such as financial challenges as a private student in his first year and various personal obstacles to meet his tuition fees, Mr. Naitoko remained resolute. He emphasized the necessity of a supportive community, urging others to choose their peer groups wisely. “Resist peer pressure and stay focused on your goals,” he advised fellow students.

As he looks to the future, Mr. Naitoko is determined to find employment in the nursing sector before contemplating further educational advancements. His story illustrates the significant rewards of resilience and dedication, serving as a beacon of motivation for others pursuing their educational dreams.
