Fiji: NFP Leader Warns Against Extremism and Urges Multiracial Unity Ahead of Elections

Acting Prime Minister and Leader of the National Federation Party (NFP), Professor Biman Prasad, has issued a stern warning against the threat of political and social extremism in Fiji. Addressing the NFP Annual Convention at the Labasa Civic Centre, Professor Prasad emphasized the crucial need for national unity to ensure a safe, multiracial future for the country. He voiced concerns over the rise of extremist elements promoting hate speech, religious intolerance, and divisive politics that endanger the nation’s cohesion.

Professor Prasad condemned recent attacks on religious sites and the spread of inflammatory content on social media, attributing these to self-serving interests rather than the collective values of the nation. He criticized politicians exploiting divisive tactics for political gain, highlighting that suggesting minority groups are marginalized is a pernicious strategy to secure votes. He asserted that the nation’s security and advancement hinge on mutual respect and collaboration among diverse communities.

Emphasizing the resilience of the Fijian silent majority, Professor Prasad highlighted their embodiment of tolerance and generosity. He encouraged Fijians to ignore divisive rhetoric and uphold values of goodwill and unity, which are essential for the nation’s stable and prosperous future.

The convention also reviewed NFP’s preparations for the forthcoming general election, focusing on sustaining a strong multiracial foundation that promotes Fijian unity. Discussions reaffirmed the NFP’s continued commitment to its principles of unity and multiracialism. As Fiji’s oldest political party, NFP’s strategies remain vital in nurturing democracy and inclusivity in the nation—a conviction that has been consistently emphasized in previous party gatherings, underscoring a longstanding dedication to collective leadership and partnership.

The NFP continues to advocate for a vision of unity amidst diversity, striving to build a future based on collective fortitude rather than divisions. With its focus on multiracialism and cooperation, the party aims to inspire further positive developments in Fijian governance and social progress.
