As the new year unfolds, Fiji’s men’s national netball team and the Fiji Pearls are gearing up for an exciting season filled with ambition and commitment to elevate their game. Head coach Jioweli Vakamoce has taken the helm, also serving as the interim coach for the Pearls until a new head coach is appointed in March. He expresses a clear vision for the teams as they embark on this journey.

“We’re not just preparing for tournaments; conditioning is a daily commitment for our athletes,” Vakamoce stated. His intention is to raise the standard of performance and ensure both teams compete at a higher level internationally.

The first training camp of the year recently commenced with fitness testing to evaluate players’ conditions after their individual training during the break. Despite minor delays due to scheduling issues, these assessments are pivotal for crafting tailored training regimes to meet each player’s needs.

The Fiji Pearls have an intense year ahead, with significant fixtures on the horizon, notably the World Cup qualifiers and the All-Sports Series. The team is prioritizing a strong campaign to secure a spot at the World Cup—a challenge they are ready to embrace.

Meanwhile, the men’s team is also preparing for their second international invitational tournament following a successful debut last year. An overseas tour to Singapore is in the plans, offering essential exposure and experience that could benefit the players in future competitions.

Vakamoce underscores the necessity of consistent conditioning as a cornerstone for achieving their objectives in the upcoming season. “Fitness and training must continue beyond tournaments and throughout the year. It’s about maintaining and improving every day,” he emphasized.

With strong leadership and a clear roadmap, Fiji’s netball teams are determined to raise their profiles in the international arena in 2024. The journey toward greater success has commenced, as the nation eagerly anticipates the results.
