A mother of four is making an urgent appeal for assistance as her 13-year-old daughter, Jiya Geetanjali Prasad, needs specialized eye treatment that is unavailable in Fiji. Evlin Ashika Devi has received medical reports from the Colonial War Memorial Hospital that confirm Jiya requires an amniotic membrane grafting procedure, which must be performed in India.

Ms. Devi is seeking to raise over $5,000 to ensure her daughter can undergo this critical treatment promptly, allowing her to continue her education in the upcoming academic year. The financial burden extends beyond just the procedure; Ms. Devi has noted that costs will include round-trip airfare for her husband and mother, who will accompany Jiya, as well as accommodation and food expenses during their stay in India.

“The hospital has warned us that if there are any complications, their stay in India may be extended, leading to additional costs,” Ms. Devi explained, emphasizing the urgency and uncertainty surrounding their situation.

Jiya has struggled with her eye health since she was six, initially presenting symptoms such as swollen eyes and lens redness. Despite receiving various medications and support from the Pacific Eye Institute, her condition has deteriorated drastically over time, leaving her in significant discomfort and unable to open her eyes.

In January, her doctors conveyed the unfortunate news that necessary surgery could not be performed locally and that specialized treatment in India is the only viable option.

Those willing to contribute to Jiya’s treatment can donate via Evlin Ashika Devi’s BSP account (number 87407367) or through M-Paisa at 2721696.

Ms. Devi remains hopeful that with community support, her daughter will receive the medical attention she desperately needs, offering a chance at improved health and a return to her studies.
