Minister for Fisheries and Forestry Alitia Bainivalu highlighted the true essence of leadership during the prefect induction ceremony at Nabua Secondary School on Friday. Addressing the newly-appointed student leaders, she emphasized that effective leadership is rooted in service, responsibility, and compassion, rather than simply wielding authority.

Bainivalu encouraged the students to view their leadership roles as commitments to empower and support their peers, rather than as symbols of power. “To lead is not to be above your peers, but to stand with the one who carries the heaviest load,” she articulated, underscoring the importance of character and actions in defining a true leader.

The minister commended the school’s welcoming environment, which boasts an inclusive approach serving 535 students, in addition to an adult learning program catering to 210 more learners. She noted that this reflects the commitment to providing accessible educational opportunities for all community members.

Additionally, Bainivalu reminded the students that leadership extends beyond academic settings, requiring consistent application of their values in everyday life. With changing global dynamics, she urged them to honor their cultural identities and view traditions as essential anchors in their communities.

Concluding on a positive note, the minister inspired the student leaders by asserting that the decisions they make today will significantly influence the future of Fiji, encouraging them to take proactive steps towards impactful leadership.
