Cabinet Minister Filimone Vosarogo has condemned remarks made by Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu that drew comparisons between Fiji’s Prime Minister and United States President Joe Biden, labelling them as “distasteful and offensive.”

In a recent statement, Mr. Vosarogo expressed his disbelief at Seruiratu’s comments, emphasizing that they were inappropriate for someone aspiring to lead the nation. “The recent statement of the Leader of Opposition is downright distasteful. It is unbelievable coming from the position he holds,” Mr. Vosarogo stated.

The criticisms were directed particularly at suggestions that President Biden was “unable to keep pace with events” and offered “conflicting recollections.” Mr. Vosarogo argued that such remarks disrespect not just the President but also the American people and Biden’s family. He added, “He should be ashamed of himself. He seeks to lead this country, and it is important that he practices decorum in his speech.”

The Minister defended President Biden’s election to office, questioning Seruiratu’s own political journey. “The 46th President of the United States carried himself to the White House by right. How about you? How did you get to Parliament?” he challenged.

Mr. Vosarogo urged Seruiratu to maintain civility and respect in political discussions, stating, “Respect is required from those who aspire to lead this nation, like the Leader of Opposition. That is fine. In doing so, do so with dignity.” He also cautioned that such inappropriate remarks could harm diplomatic relationships, underscoring the importance of responsible political communication.

The Cabinet Minister concluded by calling on Seruiratu to apologize to both the American people and the Prime Minister for his comments, reinforcing the need for respectful discourse in the pursuit of leadership.
