Media representatives gathered at the South Seas Club in Lautoka over the weekend to celebrate their achievements and contributions over the past year. The event highlighted the vital role of the media in articulating the significant developments in Fiji, particularly within a region recognized as a key economic hub.
Fiji Media Association’s general secretary, Stanley Simpson, addressed the attendees, acknowledging the unique challenges journalists face in this area. He emphasized the importance of their work, stating, “I know we think it’s a small number, but I find that it’s very important that the media, together with the opportunity arises, because of the range of, the extent and the breadth of the roles that we play and the work that we do throughout the year.”
Despite occasional feelings of isolation among West-based journalists, Simpson reaffirmed that their contributions are critical in painting a comprehensive picture of current events in Fiji. The gathering provided a rare opportunity for professionals in the industry to take a break from their stressful routines, enjoy camaraderie, and share lighthearted moments.
Simpson also urged the journalists to foster a spirit of cooperation while embracing healthy professional rivalry. He noted, “I think I know that you’re a close-knit unit here in the West, we work together. I think it’s also important that you compete strongly with each other, so that we can keep getting the best stories out of each other.”
The event underscored the resilience and dedication of media professionals in the region, reminding participants of the significance of their role in society. It served not only as a celebration of their work but also as a moment to recharge and reconnect, as they look ahead to the upcoming year’s challenges and opportunities.
