Fiji Media Legends Inducted into Hall of Fame 2025

Veteran journalists who have significantly impacted Fiji’s media landscape were honored during the FAME Awards held on Saturday night at the Novotel Lami Convention & Entertainment Centre. Five distinguished individuals were inducted into the Fiji Media Hall of Fame Class of 2025, reflecting their unwavering dedication and contribution to journalism.

Among the honorees is Vijendra Kumar, recognized as the first local editor of The Fiji Times. Known for his mentorship and courage, Kumar has left a lasting legacy in shaping generations of journalists through his steadfast commitment to truth.

Masimeke Latianara, who devoted an impressive 55 years to informing the people of Fiji, began his career as a civil servant before joining the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) in 1958. He retired at the remarkable age of 80 and sadly passed away in 2019, leaving behind a robust legacy in the media field.

Laisa Taga made history as the first woman to serve as editor of a daily newspaper in Fiji, bringing 30 years of experience to her role. Starting her career in 1978 with the Fiji Sun, Taga covered significant events such as military coups, marking her influence in the industry. She passed away in 2014.

Keith Broadbridge, a veteran broadcaster who arrived in Fiji in 1952 with little more than a suitcase, dedicated 63 years to the media, becoming a familiar and trusted voice in the nation through his work with FBC. He was highly respected within the community and also passed away in 2019.

William Parkinson, a visionary in broadcasting, established one of the most influential media organizations in Fiji by launching the first 24-hour FM radio station, FM 96, in 1984. At just 22 years old, Parkinson’s innovative spirit transformed the broadcasting landscape, and this year the company celebrates its 40th anniversary.

This celebration of veteran journalists not only commemorates their contributions but also inspires younger media professionals to uphold the standards of integrity and excellence in journalism. Their legacies serve as a guiding light for the future of media in Fiji, fostering hope and commitment to quality reporting.
