The urgency of addressing this issue has been intensified by a series of tragic incidents, including the death of a 24-year-old man from Vatukoula, who was involved in a crash after his vehicle hit a tree. Another serious accident occurred on Vunakece Road in Namadi Heights, Suva, further highlighting the reckless behavior of some drivers.
In light of these alarming statistics, Vosarogo has announced that the government may take a closer look at traffic laws and licensing regulations. This could lead to stricter eligibility criteria and re-testing requirements for both new and seasoned drivers. Furthermore, the Acting Prime Minister indicated a push for harsher penalties for reckless behaviors such as drunk driving, potentially introducing minimum imprisonment terms for offenders. The government is also considering revoking licenses for repeat offenders and enforcing jail sentences for those driving with suspended or revoked licenses. Plans for increasing roadside checks and law enforcement operations, along with the development of advanced driver education and rehabilitation programs, are also on the table.
