Health Ministry inspectors have issued 27 abatement notices for violations of the Public Health Act in maritime areas during a focused effort called “Operation Summer Schools Launch Against Mosquitoes.” This initiative is part of the Environmental Health Unit’s ongoing program to control vector-borne diseases in Fiji, particularly in educational institutions located in Ovalau.

As part of the operation, 16 school leaders were engaged to discuss potential structural and environmental improvements aimed at safeguarding students’ long-term health. Health inspectors implemented spatial spraying at three secondary schools, 13 primary schools, and surrounding staff quarters. Additionally, thorough WASH assessments were conducted at these locations, along with project scoping and priority mapping.

Inspectors further carried out larval surveillance in 16 designated school zones, crucial for understanding mosquito breeding patterns. The Ministry is gathering evidence that may lead to formal legal actions against violators of the Public Health Act.

With plans to complete operations in Ovalau by next week, the team will then shift its focus to identified high-risk communities. The ultimate goal is to create a successful proof of concept in Ovalau that can act as a model for similar interventions in other regions, thereby enhancing public health and promoting a healthier future for all.
