The launch of the inaugural National Sewer Management Compliance Committee represents a significant advancement in tackling urgent sewer and wastewater challenges nationwide. Initiated by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, this committee brings together key stakeholders, including municipal councils, the Water Authority of Fiji, and the Ministry of Health, to work collaboratively on improving sewer management practices.
Dr. Sivendra Michael, the Permanent Secretary, underscored the initiative as a direct response to the increasing public complaints and environmental risks associated with inadequate sewer management. He stressed the necessity of immediate and coordinated action to protect both public health and the environment. “Environmental protection begins at the household level. Compliance, responsibility, and respect for infrastructure are essential if we are serious about protecting public health and our environment,” he remarked.
Municipal councils played a vital role in shaping the committee’s agenda by sharing the practical challenges they face that hinder effective sewer management. The committee’s operations will be overseen by the Department of Environment, with the Water Authority of Fiji serving as Co-Chair and the Ministry of Health providing essential secretarial support.
At their first meeting, committee members defined agency roles, confronted ongoing operational issues, and initiated the creation of Standard Operating Procedures aimed at bolstering enforcement and response measures. The formation of this committee is expected to enhance national compliance, safeguard public health, and preserve the integrity of Fiji’s waterways. This initiative reflects a proactive commitment to environmental responsibility and the well-being of the community, paving the way for improved wastewater management across the country.
