Child abuse and neglect are pressing issues that demand immediate attention. In a collaborative effort, the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection, alongside Save the Children Fiji, conducted outreach activities in Qauia, Lami, and Filafou last Saturday, focusing on enhancing child safety.
During these sessions, officials from the Department of Children and the Department of Women engaged with children, aiming to bolster their understanding of their rights, safe practices, and available support systems. The Ministry underlined the significance of involving children in discussions about the decisions that impact their lives, emphasizing that every child deserves to be heard, protected, and empowered.
This outreach initiative also plays a crucial role in preparing for the upcoming national symposium, which marks the International Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect and World Children’s Day, alongside events leading to the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
Minister Lynda Tabuya has previously highlighted the urgent need to address child abuse and neglect in Fiji, using these significant observances as an opportunity to reiterate the country’s commitment to children’s rights. With alarming statistics revealing that 1,477 cases of child abuse and neglect were reported in 2023, these outreach efforts are essential in fostering community awareness and protective measures.
As Fiji strives to improve its child protection systems, this proactive approach reflects a hopeful outlook. By equipping children with knowledge and reinforcing the importance of community involvement, there is potential for significant progress in ensuring a safer environment for all children across the nation. Through concerted efforts, Fiji can build a future where children can thrive free from fear and harm.
