The Local Government and Housing Ministry is currently grappling with issues of land availability, which has prompted new strategies for housing development, as stated by Minister Maciu Nalumisa. In a recent interview during the Fiji Architecture Conference and Trade Exhibition 2025, he discussed the significance of addressing land tenure and lease renewals, highlighting that secure land access is a foundational component of any housing initiative.
Minister Nalumisa emphasized that without land, there cannot be homes. He expressed gratitude for the support from the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB), which is aiding in tackling the challenges surrounding informal settlements. “We are fortunate that TLTB is willing to partner with the Ministry of Housing and our Lands Department,” he noted, indicating a cooperative effort to resolve these ongoing challenges.
The minister pointed out that land scarcity is a pressing issue from Suva to Nausori, which has prompted the ministry to broaden its focus beyond urban centers. The Public Rental Board has recently secured land in Namelimeli, Navua, allowing the ministry to expand housing construction efforts into different regions. “We’re constructing not only in Suva but also moving to areas like Navua and Korovou,” he shared.
As urbanization continues, the demand for housing rises, raising concerns about affordability. To address these challenges, the Housing Authority is adopting innovative measures by collaborating with contractors to construct model homes, significantly reducing costs. “When the construction cost decreases, the question of affordability becomes more manageable,” Nalumisa explained.
He reassured that land can be acquired at reasonable prices, enabling affordable home construction while maintaining quality standards. This strategy aligns with the government’s broader goals, which include significant initiatives to address housing shortages and improve living conditions for all Fijians.
