Fiji Hotels Light Up Pink for Pinktober Breast Cancer Cause

Fiji Hotels Embrace Pinktober, Raising Funds for Breast Cancer

Throughout October, the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa, Grand Pacific Hotel Suva, and Holiday Inn Suva joined forces for Pinktober, raising crucial awareness and funds in support of breast cancer care. This year’s campaign, in collaboration with the Fiji Cancer Society, saw an enthusiastic response through various fundraising activities. These included the popular ‘Cup of Kindness’ coffee sales, a five-kilometer “Pink Walk” at Albert Park in Suva, and generous contributions from food and beverage sales as well as spa services.

The hotels collectively raised an impressive $20,000, which will be allocated to the Fiji Cancer Society to enhance early detection efforts, improve patient support services, and educate the community about breast cancer. Lachlan Walker, the regional general manager of IHG Hotels & Resorts in Fiji and the Pacific, emphasized the importance of Pinktober to their operations, noting that the initiative resonates deeply with families throughout Fiji.

A highlight of this year’s campaign was the beautiful pink illumination of the Grand Pacific Hotel, continuing a beloved tradition in the city’s Pinktober celebrations. Walker stated, “The lighting of the hotel’s façade serves as a powerful visual reminder of solidarity, hope, and the importance of awareness.”

Beyond fundraising, the hotels took proactive steps to promote health and well-being among their staff. On-site medical checks were provided for all employees, encouraging them to remain vigilant about their health. Inclusive medical insurance ensures that female employees can access essential screenings and treatments. These health screenings during Pinktober are part of a larger strategy aimed at fostering early detection and a culture of healthy living within the workplace.

Belinda Chan, chief executive officer of the Fiji Cancer Society, commended the ongoing partnership with the FNPF-owned hotels. She acknowledged their dedication not only to fundraising but also to community education, screening, and care.

This initiative highlights the significant role that the hospitality sector can play in advancing social causes, creating a supportive atmosphere, and empowering communities to unite for their collective well-being. The success of the Pinktober campaign underscores the transformative power of compassion and active participation in charitable initiatives, forging a stronger support network for those affected by cancer in Fiji.
