Former Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and former Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem are anxiously awaiting a verdict from the High Court today, presided over by Chief Justice Salesi Temo. The case has attracted considerable attention due to the serious charges faced by both individuals.

Sayed-Khaiyum is charged with abuse of office, while Saneem stands accused of receiving a corrupt benefit exceeding $55,000 in tax relief related to his back pay. In their defense, they are represented by Senior Counsel Devanesh Sharma and lawyer Gul Fatima, whereas the prosecution is led by Acting Director of Public Prosecutions Nancy Tikoisuva, with the Supervisor of Elections, Ana Mataiciwa, serving as the complainant.

The allegations against Sayed-Khaiyum indicate that he signed a Deed of Variation and Addendum between the Government and Saneem while acting as Prime Minister from June 30 to July 12, 2022. This action allegedly occurred without the required approvals from both the Constitutional Offices Commission and the President of Fiji.

On the other hand, Saneem is accused of unlawfully requesting and receiving tax benefits totaling over $55,000 for his back pay during the period from June 1 to July 31, 2022.

The court’s decision in this matter is poised to have far-reaching implications for both defendants, potentially influencing the broader political and legal framework in Fiji. The trial underscores the critical importance of accountability, transparency, and integrity in public office, principles that are increasingly crucial in the governance landscape. Communities across Fiji remain hopeful that the outcome will reinforce these values and contribute to a more accountable future.
