Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services, Penioni Ravunawa, has strongly encouraged the community to utilize established legal and professional channels when filing complaints against licensed medical or dental practitioners, rather than expressing grievances on social media platforms.

Ravunawa’s appeal follows the Ministry’s recent engagement with a family to guide them on the proper procedures for filing complaints according to the Fiji Medical and Dental Practitioner Act 2010. He highlighted the importance of addressing concerns about registered healthcare professionals through appropriate legal mechanisms, which are designed to ensure that all complaints are managed fairly and with respect for all parties involved.

The Minister made it clear that the Ministry of Health and Medical Services will not respond to allegations made on social media, particularly those related to patient issues. This policy underscores the need to uphold patient confidentiality and adhere to legal and ethical standards in healthcare. “Health matters often involve sensitive personal information and are regulated by stringent laws and ethical obligations. Engaging on social media poses risks of breaching confidentiality and could interfere with ongoing or potential investigations,” Ravunawa noted.

He warned that airing grievances on social media does not foster family support or effectively resolve issues, often resulting in the spread of misinformation and causing additional distress without delivering accountability or justice.

To facilitate a constructive resolution process, Ravunawa urged families and the public to formally register their complaints by calling 157, which operates 24/7, or by emailing admin@fmdc.com. He reassured the public that the ministry is ready to assist individuals and families in navigating the appropriate legal avenues, promoting a more effective approach to addressing healthcare-related concerns.

By emphasizing the use of formal channels, this initiative not only reinforces the integrity of the healthcare system but also protects patient interests, ensuring they receive the necessary care and support through proper processes.
