National Fire Authority Chief Executive Puamau Sowane has expressed his deep concern regarding fire safety as Fiji approaches the festive season. His call for heightened awareness and responsibility comes in response to a recent fire incident at Taci Village, Noco, Rewa, which caused significant damage to a family home.
On Wednesday afternoon, the NFA received an emergency call at 4:24 p.m. about a property fire. Firefighters from the Nausori Fire Station were dispatched immediately and arrived to find a two-bedroom concrete and partially wooden house engulfed in flames, with local residents attempting to combat the blaze using buckets of water. Firefighters efficiently managed to extinguish the fire by 4:57 p.m.
An investigation into the incident determined that the fire was accidental. The damaged property belonged to Kesaia Talemaitoga, who lived there with her four children, mother, and mother-in-law. Tragically, the house was uninsured, resulting in an estimated damage cost of $40,000, with 90 percent of the structure destroyed. Fortunately, there were no injuries, and nearby properties were not affected.
Sowane emphasized that the festive period significantly heightens the risk of fires and urged the community to embrace responsibility in fire prevention. He reiterated that safety starts with simple daily habits. Additionally, he addressed the challenges faced by emergency services, highlighting the importance of drivers and road users being attentive, particularly when fire trucks are en route to emergencies. He implored motorists to prioritize giving way to these vehicles, as their prompt response can save lives and property.
This incident highlights the crucial need for enhanced fire safety awareness during the festive season, a time historically marked by increased fire occurrences. The NFA’s ongoing efforts to educate the public about fire risks are essential in fostering a safer environment. With public cooperation and adherence to safety measures, there is hope for a tragedy-free celebration this holiday season.
