The Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection has announced a new initiative in collaboration with the Fiji Police Force to conduct random sweeps in urban areas, aimed at addressing the rising issue of street begging and children living or selling goods on the streets, especially during the festive season. This proactive approach, which began two weeks ago, is set to continue throughout the holiday period.

As part of this initiative, the Ministry has extended compassionate support to families found begging with children by providing them with food rations and facilitating their return home safely. In a notable case, a senior citizen living on the streets has been offered shelter and assistance at the Golden Age Home, underscoring a commitment to the welfare of vulnerable populations.

The Ministry has reminded parents and guardians of their crucial role in ensuring the safety and supervision of children, particularly during school breaks. Unaccompanied children found in public spaces will be taken to secure locations, where their parents or guardians will receive guidance on their responsibilities regarding child care.

The government affirmed its dedication to the protection of children and support for vulnerable community members, aiming to foster a safe and joyous festive season. The Ministry has called upon the community to come together in safeguarding children, the elderly, and women and girls, highlighting the importance of collective care and responsibility during this significant time of year. This initiative is a hopeful reminder of the community’s strength in looking after its most vulnerable members.
